At True North, we believe in the life-changing power of God’s Word and the importance of staying rooted in His truth. That’s why we created The Path Journal. This 365-day SOAP journal was designed to guide you through daily scripture, space for sermon notes, and offer encouragement along the way. Each week, we like to highlight an entry from a fellow "Pather" to inspire you through your scripture journey. This week, we’re exploring Genesis 37:21-22, where we see God’s hand at work even in betrayal and hardship. Let’s dive in and reflect on how He remains faithful, even when life feels out of control.

Scripture: Genesis 37:21-22

"But when Reuben heard it, he rescued him out of their hands, saying, “Let us not take his life.” And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him”—that he might rescue him out of their hand to restore him to his father."

Observation

At age 17, Joseph tended to the flocks with his brothers. Israel (Jacob) loved him the most, and gave him an ornate robe. This caused his brothers to hate him. Then, he had two dreams that caused his brothers to hate him even more. Because of this, his brothers were ready to kill him, but at the last second Reuben convinced his brothers to throw him in a cistern instead. He intended on coming to rescue him later, but the brothers sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites.

Application

What stuck out to me in this passage was the actions of Reuben. He must have felt convicted that what he was doing was wrong. His brothers were conflicted, but seemed too scared to speak up. He tried to change their plans so he could rescue Joseph, but it didn't work. Thinking about my own life, there are times I am afraid to stand up for what the Bible and God would lead me to do or believe. I do not want to be a Reuben. How can I be bolder in my own life and testimony?

Prayer

God, help me to stand firm on the things I know are right and in accordance to your word. Help me in love, while also being bold for the ultimate truth. Amen.

Trust in God's Plan during Your Moments of Darkness

Reuben’s attempt to save Joseph didn’t change the fact that he was thrown into a pit, abandoned by his brothers, and left wondering what would happen next. However, even in darkness, God’s plan was still at work. What felt like betrayal was actually the beginning of a greater purpose...one that Joseph couldn’t see yet. The same is true for us. When life doesn’t make sense, when we feel forgotten or we feel stuck in a situation beyond our control, God is still working. His plan is always unfolding, even in the pit of darkness. As you continue your journey, trust that He is weaving something greater than you can imagine. Keep seeking, trusting, and knowing that He is with you every step of the way.

Don't know what the SOAP Method is?

SOAP is one of the primary ways to dive deep into scripture and get the most out of our time with the Word. If you don’t know what the SOAP method is, it stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer:

Scripture: Physically write out the Bible verse. When writing it down, you are most likely to memorize it and you’re opening up the chance for more to be revealed to through the written words.

Observation: What do you see in the verses you’re reading? Who is speaking? Do you see a theme or something that stands out to you?

Application: How can I apply this to my real life? This is where God’s Word becomes tangible through YOU. What is God saying to you? How can you become more like Him? Are there any changes you could make?

Prayer: Has God revealed something to you during this time that you need to confess OR thank Him for? Do not skip this step! There is power in prayer and this is a great way to complete your reading time.

Need more? We are praying and here for you no matter what season of life you are in.
